Hedley tops MuchMusic awards

Toronto ceremony marred by downpour

TORONTO -- Canadian rock band Hedley dominated a thunderstorm-plagued MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday in Toronto.
Hedley grabbed four trophies, including best director and video for the single "For The Nights I Can't Remember."
Avril Lavigne earned the audience award for best Canadian artist, and Simple Plan was voted best Canadian group by fans.
Rihanna's hit single "Umbrella" was named the most-watched video on MuchMusic.com -- fitting, as the big story of the night was the torrential downpour that doused the outdoor event and forced nominees and performers to flee the red carpet and outdoor stages to save their suits.
Unlike most award shows that are indoor events, the MMVAs are largely an outdoor event; each year the ceremony takes over a city block outside the MuchMusic broadcast center in downtown Toronto to allow fans to get closer to performers and celebrities.
